If you drive for Uber or Lyft in Los Angeles, your insurance requirements are governed by California Transportation Network Company (TNC) laws. Coverage requirements change depending on whether your rideshare app is off, waiting for a ride request, or actively transporting a passenger.
For a full overview, see Los Angeles Rideshare Insurance for Uber & Lyft Drivers. Drivers in other California rideshare markets may also want to review our guides for San Francisco, San Diego, and Sacramento.
California Minimum Auto Insurance Requirements
All California drivers must carry at least the following minimum liability coverage:
- $15,000 bodily injury liability per person
- $30,000 bodily injury liability per accident
- $5,000 property damage liability
These limits apply during personal driving when the rideshare app is off.
Insurance Coverage by Driving Period
- App Off: Personal auto insurance applies.
- Period 1 (App On, Waiting): Limited liability coverage provided by Uber or Lyft.
- Periods 2 & 3 (Ride Accepted / Passenger Onboard): Up to $1 million in liability coverage.
Why Many Drivers Add Rideshare Insurance
Many personal auto policies exclude commercial driving activity. Because rideshare driving involves transporting passengers for compensation, drivers often add a rideshare endorsement to maintain continuous coverage.
